H.E. Eng. Karim Badawai, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral resources, has appointed Eng. Mahmoud Abdel Hamid Mahmoud Chairman of the board and Managing Director of Tharwa Petroleum Company.

Eng. Mahmoud has Over 34 years of experience in the oil & gas public sector in Egypt, covering all aspects of upstream activities including the development of oil and Gas reserves, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) including export, import and marketing. Experience includes oil & gas production and operations, crude oil treatment & shipping, pipelines operations and distribution networks. Successful experiences working in a multinational setting within a wide range of oil and gas projects locally and regionally. A strong background in the management and operation of international organizations.

Eng. Mahmoud Abdel Hamid has worked in a number of positions in various sectors of the petroleum industry,

Prior to his appointment as Tharwa Chairman, Eng. Mahmoud was Chairman & Managing Director of Esh El Mallaha Petroleum Company (a Joint venture between EGPC and Luk Oil) from August 2017 to September 2024.

He was assigned for the duty of vice Chairman for production and Operations of South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Co. “Ganope”, from November 2016 to August 2017.

Eng. Mahmoud has been appointed Chairman & Managing Director for Egyptian Fajr Natural Gas Company “Fajr” from February 2016 to November 2016.

Eng. Mahmoud Abdel Hamid was the Assistant Vice Chairman for Operations and Networks for Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company “EGAS”, from February 2014 to February 2016, as head of LNG importation project, he was responsible for development of Egyptian LNG imports, including site selection, berthing of FSRU’s, basin studies, negotiation of all contracts related to FSRUs and for LNG supply.

Over the course of his career, Eng. Mahmoud has worked in various positions in the petroleum sector, as follows:

  • Asst. Managing Director Operations for Spanish Egyptian Gas Company “SEGAS”, Egypt from August 2010 to February 2014.
  • General Manager for Development Studies, EGAS Operations for Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company “EGAS”, Egypt from June 2007 to August 2010.
  • Asst. General Manager for Development Studies, EGAS Operations. Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company “EGAS”, Egypt from July 2002 to June 2007.
  • Production department head at main head office in Cairo for Magawish Petroleum Company, from October 2001 to July 2002.
  • East Esh Mellaha Marine Field & Project Manager for Magawish Petroleum Company, from Feb 1999 to October 2001
  • Training instructor in the International training center in Cairo from July1998 to Feb 1999.
  • Operations supervisor at Omar Gas plant in Al-Furat Petroleum Company, “a joint venture between SIPC and Shell” Syria from July1992 to July 1998
  • Process Shift Engineer for Badr Petroleum Company,  Bed – 3 Oil & Gas Plant from Jan. 1990 to July 1992, “a joint venture between EGPC and Shell”.

He earned his BS degree In Petroleum Engineering, from Suez Canal University, Faculty of Petroleum and Mining Engineering,   with a V.Good and honor degree in 1988 and ranked the first in his college.
